Patricia MacKenzie, Artistic Director
(ADCSC-CICB); FSDTA; SOBHD Judges Panel

Pattie MacKenzie has devoted her life to the teaching of dance and the mentoring of young people.  She has taught ballet and highland in her own school in Port Alberni for more than 40 years, producing numerous champion dancers, a multitude of enthusiastic and qualified teachers and legions of dance lovers.  She has been a part of Dancestreams since 1992 as Assistant to founder Bev Aitchison, and was named Artistic Director in 1996.  During her tenure, the Company has toured internationally, been granted a Creation Residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts and many dancers have progressed to professional careers as dancers, choreographers, teachers and administrators.  She has worked closely with and rehearsed the works of renowned choreographers.  Her enthusiasm and encouragement have propelled young dancers to successful careers both in and out of the arts.  As a Scottish Official Board Judge, she is qualified to adjudicate all competitions and championships world-wide, including National and International Championships.  She continues to pursue more knowledge by attending teachers workshops, master classes and seminars throughout Canada & the USA.

Julia Carr, Assistant Artistic Director

Julia Carr began her intensive movement training at Arts Umbrella, in 1996, when she became a member of their youth dance company under the directorship of Artemis Gordon. She now holds a B.Sc. Biology from Acadia University, an MA in Dance Performance from the University of Limerick (Ireland), received the Vancouver Foundation’s 2004/2005 Advanced
Arts Study Award to attend the Ballet BC Mentor Program, and was hired to apprentice with EDAM Dance for their 2007/2008 season.  At the start of 2008, Carr became a founding member of the Body Narratives Collective (www.bodynarratives.com), where she continues to co-direct collaborative interdisciplinary creations with Meghan Goodman.

Julia works regularly as a dance interpreter for Aeriosa Dance Society, Raven Spirit Dance, and Compaigni V’ni Dansi, and has also performed professional works by choreographers Peter Bingham, Jennifer Clarke, Sara Coffin, Henry Daniel, Deb Heard, Caroline Liffmann, Kathleen McDonagh, and Kathryn Ricketts. Julia is equally as proficient at dancing in the studio and theatre as she is at dancing suspended from heights, on vertical surfaces, in the woods, on the beach, public parks, urban spaces, and art galleries.

Carr is an active member of BC’s dance community. She has been a CADA/BC board member and fundraiser, a steering committee member for the Dancer Transition Resource Centre’s BC office, worked as Production Assistant for Mascall Dance’s “Bloom Series”, as Assistant to the Artistic and Executive Director at MainDance, and since September of 2008 has acted as Dancestreams’ Assistant Artistic Director.
